Why it feels harder
A payslip tells a lender three things at once: how much you earn, that you earn it every month, and who pays you. Without one, a lender has to piece the same picture together from other evidence. Many lenders don't want to do that work, so they ask for documents self-employed people don't have, and the answer becomes no.
There are more than a million gig and platform workers in Malaysia, plus many more freelancers, hawkers and small traders. Their income is real. The task is simply to show it in a form a lender can verify. Once you know which documents do that, most of the difficulty disappears, and you can compare offers on equal terms with a salaried borrower.
What a lender is actually looking for
- Regular deposits into one bank account over at least six months
- An average monthly income after your work costs that comfortably covers the instalment
- No large unexplained gaps — or a clear explanation for any you have
- Evidence that the income will continue: an active platform account, regular clients or a registered business
- Your existing commitments, so the new instalment fits alongside them
How we average a changing income
Here is an illustrative example for a food-delivery rider. We take six months of platform payouts from the bank statements, add them up and divide by six. Then we allow for the costs of doing the work — fuel, maintenance, phone data — to arrive at a realistic monthly figure.
| Month | Payouts received |
|---|---|
| January | RM3,200 |
| February | RM2,800 |
| March | RM3,600 |
| April | RM2,400 |
| May | RM3,100 |
| June | RM2,900 |
| Six-month total | RM18,000 |
| Monthly average | RM3,000 |
| Less estimated work costs (about 25%) | RM750 |
| Income we would use | RM2,250 |
April was a weak month, but it doesn't sink the application, because it's balanced by the others. What would concern us is a steady decline over the six months, or a month with nothing at all and no explanation.
Explaining gaps and unusual months
Almost everyone who works for themselves has a month that looks odd on paper. What matters is that you can explain it. A short, honest explanation backed by evidence turns a worrying gap into an ordinary part of your history.
- Illness or an accident — a medical certificate or hospital bill
- Vehicle off the road — a workshop invoice showing the repair dates
- Festive season or school holidays — the same pattern in the previous year's statements
- Switching platforms — earnings statements from both the old and the new platform
Tell us about any gap when we first call, rather than waiting for us to spot it. It saves time on the video verification call and shows that you understand your own finances — which is exactly what a lender wants to see.
Documents that work
| Type of work | Main documents |
|---|---|
| E-hailing and delivery | 6 months' bank statements; earnings statements from each platform app |
| Freelancers and contractors | 6 months' bank statements; invoices or contracts from regular clients; Borang B |
| Hawkers and small traders | 6 months' bank statements; SSM registration or local council licence; Borang B if filed |
| Commission-based sales | 6 months' bank statements; commission statements from the company |
In every case, have your MyKad in hand to show a licensed officer on a short video call, and a list of your existing loans and card balances. Our website form never asks for your IC number or documents — once we have contacted you quoting your reference number, you send clear photos or PDFs of these documents only to the official WhatsApp number shown on this site.
EPF i-Saraan and tax returns help more than you'd think
EPF's i-Saraan scheme lets self-employed people make voluntary retirement contributions, with an incentive from the government on top up to a yearly limit. Regular i-Saraan contributions show a lender that you have steady money left over each month — and they build your retirement savings at the same time.
Filing Borang B with LHDN every year does something similar. It gives an independent, dated record of your declared income. Even if you owe little or no tax, a filed return is one of the strongest documents a self-employed borrower can provide.
A six-month plan to become 'lendable'
- 1
Month 1: one account for work income
Open or choose one bank account and have every platform, client and customer pay into it. Move your personal spending money out with one transfer a week.
- 2
Month 1: register if you can
Register your business with SSM, or with your local council if you trade from a stall. It's inexpensive and adds credibility.
- 3
Months 1–6: contribute to i-Saraan
Even a small amount every month builds a visible pattern.
- 4
Months 1–6: keep your records
Download platform statements every month and keep invoices together. Don't rely on being able to find them later.
- 5
Month 6: check your credit reports
Download CCRIS and CTOS and fix any errors before you apply.
How much is sensible to borrow
Because your income varies, plan your instalment around a weaker month, not an average one. Using the rider example above, an instalment of around RM300 would leave plenty of room even in April. Here is what a RM6,000 personal loan over 24 months looks like at the top of our current rate band:
| Monthly instalment | RM 340.00 |
|---|---|
| Total interest | RM 2,160.00 |
| Total you repay | RM 8,160.00 |
| Stamp duty (once, to LHDN) | RM 30.00 |
| Effective annual rate | 31.46% p.a. |
If the instalment you want is more than a third of your weakest month's income, consider a smaller amount or a longer period — our loans run for up to 108 months — and talk it through with us on the video call.
Don't use fake documents
Questions
I've only been driving e-hailing for four months. Can I apply?
We'll still look at it, but with less history we may offer a smaller amount. If you had a salaried job before, send those payslips too — they show your track record.
My income goes into my spouse's account. Does that count?
Not directly, because it's their account. The loan must be based on income you can show is yours. Switching payouts to your own account for a few months solves this.
Should I apply for an SME loan instead?
If your business is registered with SSM, has run for over a year and turns over at least RM15,000 a month, an SME loan may suit you better. Otherwise a personal loan assessed on your bank statements is usually simpler.
Do you need my platform login?
Never. Download the statements yourself and send them to our official WhatsApp number. No genuine lender needs your passwords, TAC or online banking login.
What to do next
Send an enquiry online and choose 'Self-employed' or 'Gig / platform worker' as your employment — it takes about three minutes and needs no IC number or documents. When we WhatsApp or call you, we'll tell you exactly which statements to prepare and give you an honest view of what you're likely to qualify for. Everything after that happens online, so you never have to take a day off the road: a 15–20 minute video verification, an e-signed Schedule J agreement, and the money paid into a bank account in your own name.
